White Women Wore Hoodies to a Tennessee Mall to Prove Its Hoodie Policy Onl

Four white women walked in the same Tennessee mall where several black teenagers were harassed and arrested after violating the “no hoodie” policy, the women, who were wearing hoodies, wanted to expose Memphis Police and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office’s racial profiling of black men. The women put their hoods up and were politely reminded one time to not wear their hoods up in order for security to identify faces. Shannon Arthur who posted a picture of her and the other women wearing hoodies in the mall on her Facebook page wrote, “I respect law enforcement. And mall cops. But there’s no question that some members of our community are constantly harassed and traumatized where those with less melanin are given a pass. We must do better. ”Nashville activist Theeda Murphy recently led a successful effort to pass an amendment to create a Community Oversight Board in Nashville that oversees the police and would help people voice their opinions in cases like these. “It doesn’t matter if the officers are Black or white because they all get the same training.”
