Alicia Keys Shares Note She Sent To Father At 14: 'Mind Your Own Business'

Alicia Keys has a complicated past with her father, Craig, and the R&B titan is opening up about their history.

As part of her recent memoir, More Myself, a new excerpt was highlighted by Keys on Thursday (May 14) via social media, along with some context as to how she views the note now. "It saddens me that most of my heart is bitter towards you," the then-teenager wrote in the note. "All I want is for you to mind your own business. I don’t want the phone calls. I don’t want the letters.I don’t want the fake acts you pull to try and make me think you care. I don’t want anything."

Over in the caption section, AK reiterated that she truly wanted nothing to do with him. "My words came from a place of vulnerability and longing," she said of her heartfelt letter. "At the time it hurt so much to experience what felt like empty promises. I swore I didn't care, but I did and it affected me deeply. I finally had enough and wrote those words."

Later on, the singer said it felt "crazy" that Craig kept the note after all these years. "I was so shocked when he first showed me. It was tucked away in a shoe box full of memories," she continued, adding, "I'm glad he and I can look back at it now as a sign of how far we’ve come."

You can read more personal tales from Keys' life in the memoir, including the moment she felt "manipulated" by a photographer during the early days of her career.
