Merriam-Webster Adds Eminem's Definition Of 'Stan' To Its Dictionary

Just as Oxford English Dictionary did in 2017, Merriam-Webster announced on Tuesday (April 23) that "stan" has been added to its dictionary as both a noun and a verb.

Citing Eminem's 2000 smash, "Stan," as the origin of the word, the term is directed defined as an extremely or excessively enthusiastic and devoted fan. Its listed examples, particularly as a verb, are amusing, to say the least. "I stanned pretty hard for Christina [Aguilera] as a teen; I remember begging my mom for tickets to the Justified/Stripped tour, and even from our nosebleed seats, Christina's voice was stunning," one example reads. "Stan" is one of 640 new additions, which also include "snowflake," "swole" and "EGOT."

"The English language never sleeps, and neither does the dictionary," Merriam-Webster said in a statement. “The work of revising a dictionary is constant, and it mirrors the culture’s need to make sense of the world with words. There are always new things to be named and new uses for existing words to be explained."

In other news, Slim Shady recently saw another accomplishment: 11 years of sobriety. On Saturday, the 46-year-old rapper celebrated his 11-year anniversary of sobriety via Instagram with an inspiring post of his sobriety coin. In case you weren't aware, the token is often given to either Alcoholics Anonymous or other 12-step program members to indicate how long the individual has remained sober.
