Demi Lovato Reveals That She Contemplated Suicide At Age 7

We all know that Demi Lovato has overcome many of her demons, but the pop star isn't done sharing her struggles with the world and her newest confession hits hard. In her new interview with Dr. Phil, the 25-year-old star revealed that she contemplated suicide as a 7-year-old girl.

On Tuesday (March 20), Lovato appeared on Dr. Phil and went down memory lane to emphasize that her struggle with mental health harks back to her childhood. "The very first time I was suicidal was when I was seven and I had this fascination with death," she admitted during her sit-down interview. "I have experienced things that I have not talked about and don't know if I ever will talk about. At seven, I knew that if I were to take my own life that the pain would end."

Lovato explained that the suicidal thoughts came back time after time as she went through her other lows. "It came back when I was bullied; it came back several times when I was struggling with depression—my bipolar disorder," she admitted. "I turned to cutting and there was a while there when my mom was afraid to wake me up in the morning she didn't know if I would be alive or not because every time I cut it got deeper and deeper."

Asked what drove her suicidal thoughts, the singer attributed that mentality to sadness from her family roots. "I believe that a lot of that had to do with unresolved issues with my birth father that I hadn't dealt with yet," she continued. "Now, that I've gotten older and I've been able to grieve the loss of him and I've been able to step back and look from a distance that he was mentally ill and it wasn't his heart that meant to abandon me. I've been able to overcome his loss and understand where everything went wrong, and that sadness has been going away."
